Innovative Traffic Safety Enforcement Grants

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a new $20M Innovative Traffic Safety Enforcement (ITSE) grant program to deploy cutting-edge traffic safety enforcement innovations.

While NHTSA will consider innovative enhancements to existing countermeasures, the goal is to develop evidence-based projects that are scalable and transferable for use by state and local law enforcement agencies.

The primary target of the program is to develop innovative traffic safety enforcement programs that demonstrate effectiveness by reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes due to one or more of the subject risky driving behaviors. In addition, the program aims to ensure the traffic safety enforcement programs are repeatable and scalable for use by law enforcement throughout the United States.

Activities Include:

  • State-of-the-art safety tech to curb dangerous driving behaviors
  • Predictive data-driven analytics to deploy law enforcement resources
  • Public-private partnerships to incentivize positive driving behavior
  • Training to educate law enforcement on dangerous driving behaviors
