Future in Focus: A Succession Planning Micro Series presents 12 monthly micro-workshops that address accelerated retirements in public works by building essential leadership skills for women through a structured, peer-led mentorship approach.

The American Public Works Association's (APWA) Women in Public Works Network identified succession planning as the most critical priority for the coming year, recognizing that public works agencies across the county are facing accelerating retirements, along with shifting workforce expectations. To remain strong and resilient, agencies must prepare the next generation of women leaders, and the network is uniquely positioned to support that effort.

These 12 micro-workshops are are designed to strengthen essential leadership, communication, and technical and career-readiness skills that directly contribute to a more prepared and promotable workforce.

An equally important benefit of the series is the opportunity it creates for women who excel in these areas to share their expertise. Many APWA-members have expressed that mentoring and peer support were vital to their growth in public works, and these workshops provide a structured platform for women to guide and elevate one another.

This peer-led approach is designed to strengthen individual confidence and visibility but also reinforce a culture of mentorship that is essential for long-term succession planning.
